An Anthony, New Mexico resident made an odd discovery on her way back from the store — a box full of puppies on the side of the road.

Nancy Beyers said she first noticed something unusual on her way to the store but didn’t stop. On her way back she did. Beyers thought she saw a dead puppy just off the road.

“I happen to just push the puppy with my foot and it yelped,” Beyers said. “I thought, ‘Oh my God.'”

That’s when Beyers said she heard another noise and discovered a box under a nearby tree.

“When I looked in the box there are puppies and I went, ‘Oh my God.'”

She found six puppies alive and one that was already dead. Beyers took the box of living puppies home and fed them milk while she waited for Dona Ana County Animal Control to arrive.

“I was pissed,” Beyers said. “I’m sorry, but I was really pissed off. If you can’t afford to take care of your animals either spay them or don’t have them. Don’t leave them on the side of the road.”

Animal Control documented each of the puppies before taking them away, but about two hours later Beyers felt compelled to go back down the road.

“Something tells me to go look [again],” Beyers told her mother as she began walking down the road.

Beyers found an eighth puppy, the seventh one alive.

ABC-7 was with Beyers when Animal Control arrived again. The officer assured Beyers the puppies would be bottle fed and cared for at the shelter before they all go up for adoption.

If you ever have concerns about what to do with animals you can’t care for, you’re asked to contact Animal Control with any questions.
