One man dead after officer involved shooting incident in New Mexico

CHAPARRAL, New Mexico -- Officials say one man is dead after firing shots at a Doña Ana County Sheriff deputy early this morning.

It happened in a vacant area near the 100 block of Iron Horse in Chaparral, NM at around 5:38 A.M.

According to the Doña Ana County Sheriff's office, deputies responded to a call regarding shots fired and identified a male suspect upon arrival. An investigation was conducted and it was determined the suspect was involved in the negligent discharge of a weapon. Police officials say a neighbor who knew the suspect declined to pursue further action.

Shortly after, deputies again responded to the same area regarding the suspect who was ramming the neighbor's car with his car. Deputies searched for the suspect in the vacant land near the incident with the assistance of the Otero County Sheriff's Office and the Anthony Police department.

According to authorities, the alleged suspect fired his weapon at a Doña Ana County Sheriff deputy who returned fire. The suspect was found dead.
