EL PASO, Texas -- Local public health leaders reported Monday morning that two more people had died from Covid-19 in El Paso and another 77 tested positive.

That means El Paso County has recorded 102 deaths and 3,911 cases to date.

The latest fatalities were two women in their 90s, but officials said only one had underlying health conditions.

The Department of Public Health also reported that another 20 people recovered, so El Paso has had 2,732 total recoveries.

That leaves the county with 1,077 known active cases as the day's new cases once again exceeded new recoveries.

Officials said that the number of Covid-19 hospitalizations decreased from 85 to 78. Of those hospitalized, 50 patients are in the ICU and 28 are on ventilators.

It's worth noting that it's been more than two weeks after the first protest following George Floyd's death was held in El Paso. That's the average time it takes for a person to start showing Covid-19 symptoms.

We may find out if the there is a new spike in cases due to the protests in the coming days, or possibly weeks since several other protests were held later. Keep in mind that some people did wear face coverings during the demonstration.

The City/County Health Authority, Dr. Hector Ocaranza, said that everyone who protested should get tested. He indicated Monday that one out of every four infections involves people who are asymptomatic - or not showing any signs of virus illness.
