No new El Paso virus deaths; almost 60% have received at least 1 shot but infection rate remains stuck

EL PASO, Texas -- There were no new deaths due to Covid-19 reported by El Paso public health officials on Sunday, leaving the county's pandemic death toll at 2,508.

Officials did announce 96 additional cases and said the number of active infections in El Paso stands at 2,382. There have been a total of 133,366 confirmed cases throughout the pandemic.

As of Sunday morning, there were 171 El Pasoans hospitalized with Covid-related illness, with 50 of those patients listed in intensive care and 30 requiring the use of ventilators.

Health department data indicates about 60% of eligible El Pasoans have now received at least one dose of virus vaccine.

However, El Paso Matters CEO Bob Moore notes that "even as vaccines are increasingly available, the number of new Covid-19 infections in El Paso has remained stuck for six weeks."

"The number of people requiring hospital care for Covid-19 is where it was at the beginning of April," Moore added in his weekly analysis of local virus trends.

This past week, city and county officials indicated that El Paso’s vaccine wait list had been exhausted with the City of El Paso and University Medical Center moving to direct appointment scheduling and a walk-in vaccine site.
