Sunday Funday Moment: Las Cruces students create lemonade stand to raise funds for pediatric cancer research

Las Cruces, NM-- A few students from University Hills Elementary School in Las Cruces learned the importance of entrepreneurship and giving back to their community all thanks to a lemonade stand.

“We're trying to raise money for charity and our goal is $400,” said University Hills student Dylan Manez.

After reading a book during their summer program about a sibling lemonade war, University Hills elementary students decided to have a lemonade stand of their own.

“So we really wanted to teach the kids about entrepreneurship we taught them about the advertising marketing, we looked at the profits and how we would go about to set everything up,” said University Hills third grade teacher, Jackee Scarborough.

But this lemonade stand would teach the students a lot more than just entrepreneurship skills.

“It's teaching us to donate and be nice and help people that are sick,” said fourth grader Emily Luna.

And this lemonade stand would even spark the students minds when it came to thinking about their future careers.

“When I grow up I want to be a cop so I can save even more people,” said Dylan.

The goal was to raise $400 through this lemonade stand which would be the equivalent to an hours worth of pediatric cancer research, and all funds would be donated to Alex’s Lemonade stand, a non-profit organization that raises money for childhood cancer research.

This lemonade stand was a way for teachers to teach their students that giving back to others in need can be a fun and fulfilling experience.

“Children at this age, they're just like sponges so when you teach them to give back it really helps them feel good,” said Scarborough, “They feel good about themselves and they really enjoy helping and giving back to others.”
