Toyota launches 2020 Supra after years of speculation

DETROIT - After years of spy photos and concept renderings, Toyota finally unveiled the 2020 Supra Monday at the North American International Auto Show.

Sports car enthusiasts will point out that there have been countless pictures of the car in various layers of camouflage circulating around the web for years. Toyota itself has even released official photos of the car covered in a grey, black, white and red mosaic print meant to conceal its true styling.

Under the hood sits a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that cranks out 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. Though the Supra shares the same platform and 6-cylinder engine as the as the new BMW Z4 sports car that was unveiled last year, Toyota tuned the engine to meet the specific needs of their car.

The two cars are part of a joint partnership between BMW and Toyota. Though the two share no sheetmetal, the companies saved costs by combining their efforts on the engine and other mechanical bits.

Toyota managers expect the Supra to go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.1 seconds, making it the fastest Toyota-badged car ever.

Standard safety features include things like automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and road sign assist. If you want, you can also order your Supra with adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and a head-sup display system.

The first new Supra in 21 years will go on sale this summer and will have a starting price of just below $50,000.
