EL PASO, Texas -- Today's Sunday Funday Moment introduces us to a special woman who does not just give back to her community during the Thanksgiving season, but everyday.
Dorene Corothers is the director and founder of the 'You eat, I eat' community unity food pantry located in northeast El Paso.
"We are a food pantry, we don't ask for any proof of anything you just come in to receive," said Corothers.
For years, Mrs. Corothers has been feeding and clothing the homeless in her northeast community. She also provides free meals to local students and their family.
For Mrs. Corothers, the idea of giving back to those in her community came back in 2014 when she spent an entire summer in and out of the hospital.
Mrs. Corothers said that it was God who touched her spirit, healed her and placed in her heart the spirit to give back to others.
"Yea, he placed it in my heart but he didn’t make me do anything,” said Mrs. Corothers.
After that realization, she went to several different churches in her community and explained to them that God told her to go to those churches and learn from them.
"And he told me to tell you to teach me what you know. Every last church that I went into told me that you don’t know really what circumstances anyone that walks through the doors to receive benefits are going through. I was just so thankful for the lessons that I learned,” said Mrs. Corothers.
The non-profit food pantry relies on donations from the community to keep their doors open. If you would like to donate to the food pantry click here.
