Every year, Sun Bowl college football teams and sports fans have been pumping millions of dollars into the Borderland economy.

This year could be even more promising for El Pasoans now that two football powerhouses will battle it out for the prestigious Sun Bowl trophy.

Arizona State University Sun Devils will face off against Florida State University Seminoles December 31st in the 86th annual Sun Bowl, the first Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

According to Sun Bowl executive director Bernie Olivas, fans spend anywhere from $14 to $17 million dollars in the Borderland during the Sun Bowl.

Olivas says the highest amount spent in recent history was when two nationally recognized college football teams were invited to the Sun Bowl, which is when Notre Dame faced off against Miami.

Olivas tells ABC 7 host Saul Saenz who else fought for a Sun Bowl spot, but was left out on ABC 7 Xtra.
