Minivan sought in deadly hit & run on I-10 that claimed life of 19-year-old Fort Bliss soldier

El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies said Thursday they were looking for a vehicle that struck and killed a Fort Bliss soldier who was walking along Interstate 10 near Horizon last weekend.

Authorities described the vehicle as a dark-colored SUV or minivan, possibly a Dodge Caravan, with front end damage and perhaps windshield damage too. Investigators released an image depicting the type of vehicle they’re seeking and asked for the public’s help in finding it.

Deputies said the minivan struck 19-year-old Gage Aaron Thornton on I-10 east at mile marker 38 on Saturday about 7:15 p.m. and “continued traveling eastbound after the collision.”

Investigators have said it was unknown why Thornton, who Army officials confirmed was stationed at the Fort Bliss, was walking on the highway — or how he got there.

Deputies asked that anyone with information on this incident contact the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office at 915-832-4408 or 9-1-1.
