EL PASO, Texas -- A 43-year-old El Paso man was arrested Thursday by police for allegedly dragging a dog to its death with his pickup truck.

Jose Bautista was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on $5,000 bond on a charge of animal cruelty.

Detective Diane Mack said the arrest stemmed from an incident on Nov. 3 when "Bautista was observed by several witnesses driving a Chevy pick-up truck, while dragging a German Shepherd mix tethered to the back of the truck."

"When confronted by the on-lookers, Bautista picked up the canine, which appeared to be dead, threw it in the back of the truck and drove away," Mack explained, adding that investigators were later able to identify him as the man who was dragging the dog.
