Sheriff’s deputies seek witnesses to deadly SAC shooting

UPDATE, July 23: The El Paso County Sheriff's Office put out a public call for help, seeking witnesses to a shooting behind the Socorro Activities Complex earlier this month that killed a man and left several others hospitalized.

The shooting, which authorities labeled a homicide, happened during a party in a desert area near the SAC. So far, no arrests have been made.

"The Sheriff’s Office is requesting that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or may have any information contact the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office at (915) 832-4408 or major Crimes Detective Victor Cordero (915) 208-3007," a sheriff's official said in a statement issued Friday.

UPDATE, July 14: El Paso County Sheriff's deputies on Wednesday identified the victim killed in a weekend mass shooting behind the Socorro Activities Complex, and said some of those injured had been released from the hospital.

Cruz Eli Arredondo, 21, was the man fatally shot, while authorities said a 17-year-old boy and 18-year-old man had been released from the hospital. In addition, they said a 20-year-old man and 22-year-old man remained hospitalized in stable condition. A fifth wounded person suffered an ankle injury and didn't require hospitalization, officials said.

As of Wednesday, no arrests had been made in the shootings.

ORIGINAL REPORT, July 11: SOCORRO, Texas -- A man was killed and five people seriously wounded during a mass shooting Sunday morning behind the Socorro Activities Complex, El Paso County Sheriff's deputies said.

Reports of shots fired in a desert area near the SAC, located at 1300 Joe Battle Boulevard near Bob Hope, were received around 3:15 a.m. by the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said they arrived to find multiple shooting shooting victims: A 21-year-old man was dead and five others were rushed to local hospitals with serious gunshot wounds.

The uncle of the deceased said he was told by investigators that his nephew was found lying face down; he was shot in the back as he, like others, were trying to flee when the gunfire broke out.

There was no immediate word as to what led to the mass shooting or whether any arrests had been made; the Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit said it was investigating and remained on scene hours later.

The Gun Violence Archive, an independent non-profit research group whose data is frequently cited, defines a mass shooting as firearm violence resulting in at least four people being shot at roughly the same time and location.

This was the second shooting involving multiple victims at the SAC in just over a year. Three people were wounded, one critically, during a party that took place behind it in June 2020.
