Police say man shot at central El Paso bar was intruder who broke in


UPDATE, Oct.20: Police said a 37-year-old man wounded at Chankla’s bar over the weekend was a burglar who was shot after breaking in.

Investigators said the man, whose identity wasn’t released, had been thrown out of the bar along with his girlfriend after being involved in an altercation.

Later that morning, the man returned to the bar and threatened two men who worked there with a gun.

Police said the pair locked themselves in the bar and shot the 37-year-old when he forced his way in.

The intruder remained hospitalized Wednesday in critical but stable condition.

ORIGINAL REPORT, Oct. 16: EL PASO, Texas -- A person was seriously wounded early Saturday in a shooting in central El Paso.

Police said the gunfire happened about 1:30 a.m. in the 4800 block of Dyer Street; that block is home to a number of bars and restaurants.

Crime scene tape was erected around the area of Chankla's Hole in the Wall Bar.

The shooting victim was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital in serious condition.

Authorities didn't indicate what led up to the shooting or whether any arrests had occurred.

No further details were immediately available.

  1. I wonder who is going to pay for his hospital bill. I hope it’s not the tax payers.

    I hope the District Attorney puts this thug behind prison for a long time.

    1. The usual trick is to not formally charge him until he is released from the hospital, unless he tries to leave on his own, then charge him. It won’t really matter though, he probably doesn’t have a dime to his name, so we will still be stuk with the bill.
