Northeast El Paso teen latest arrested for firing gun from moving car in viral video

UPDATE, Oct. 27: Police announced the arrest Wednesday of northeast El Paso teen seen in a social media video shooting a semi-automatic firearm into the air from a moving car.

It followed a report Tuesday night by ABC-7 highlighting this latest incident in what's becoming a disturbing trend of such cases in the Borderland.

Luis Moreno, 17, was being held in the El Paso County Detention Facility on adult charges including deadly conduct by discharging a firearm, evading arrest and making a terrorist threat.

Judge Ruben Nunez ordered Moreno on $60,000 bond following his arrest by gang unit officers at Franklin Park after a brief foot chase.

ORIGINAL REPORT, Oct. 26: EL PASO, Texas -- A dangerous trend is playing out in the Borderland: Armed young men looking for a few seconds of fame on social media by firing off weapons in public.

Police on Tuesday asked for the public's help trying to find two young men who recorded themselves two days ago shooting an AR-15 style rifle out of a moving car window.

Several live rounds were fired while cars passed in the opposite direction in a video the pair posted on social media; it was shared with ABC-7 by FitFam El Paso.

This is not the first time this type of incident has happened on the streets of El Paso.

In Oct. 2019, police arrested two brothers, 21-year-old Josue Efrain Macias and 23-year-old Ruben Armando Macias, after a video went viral showing both randomly shooting while driving on an El Paso freeway.

A swat team and the police gang unit took both into custody at their home in northeast El Paso.

The Macias brothers were later convicted discharging of a firearm within the city limits, a misdemeanor.

But ABC-7 has obtained court documents which show the Macias' cases were refiled by prosecutors and upgraded to felonies. Their trial date is set for December.

Then there's the case surrounding 26-year-old Jonathan Jay Oneal, a Fort Bliss soldier.

Last year, Oneal was seen on a 20-second video clip which shows him firing several rounds into the sky as cars passed in the opposite direction along the Patriot Highway near Spur 601.

He was sentenced to a year in the county jail on three counts of discharging a firearm within a municipality. Oneal also faced separate animal cruelty charges for allegedly leaving his dog outside in sweltering temperatures to die.
