EL PASO, Texas -- An El Paso Electric Company contractor was electrocuted while working on a utility pole in the city's Lower Valley on Thursday.

It happened in the 1000 block of Southside Drive, according to both police and the utility company.

"Our condolences go out to the family of the El Paso Electric subcontractor who passed due to electrocution this morning while working on a utility pole on the property behind the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank," the food bank said in a social media post.

An EPE spokesman described it as a "contact accident," meaning the worker came in contact with a live wire and was electrocuted.

El Paso police detectives were summoned to the scene before noon to investigate the death, which they determined was "accidental."

No further details surrounding the deadly incident were available late Thursday afternoon.
