SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Ian Book ran 7 yards for a touchdown with 29 seconds left to cap an 18-play, 87-yard drive and No. 16 Notre Dame pulled out a 21-20 victory against Virginia Tech on Saturday. The winning drive averted a second straight loss by Brian Kelly’s Fighting Irish (6-2), who lost at Michigan 45-14 last week after a bye. Virginia Tech (5-3) almost pulled off the upset with the help of a 98-yard fumble return for a TD by Divine Deablo.
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Trevor Lawrence accounted for four touchdowns, Travis Etienne ran for 212 yards and two TDs, and No. 4 Clemson beat FCS opponent Wofford 59-14 for its 24th consecutive victory. Etienne had scoring runs of 47 and 86 yards to become Clemson’s career leader with 48 rushing TDs. He also became the first in school history with three 200-yard rushing games in his career.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Jamie Newman returned from injury to throw for three touchdowns and run for two more as No. 23 Wake Forest beat North Carolina State 44-10. Newman had missed one game and part of another with a shoulder injury. But he helped the Demon Deacons roll to a 24-0 lead by early in the second quarter. First-time starting quarterback Devin Leary threw for 149 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions for the Wolfpack.
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson starting defensive end Xavier Thomas is expected to miss a third consecutive game since suffering a concussion at practice last month. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney says Thomas has made significant progress since entering the concussion protocol before No. 4 Clemson’s 45-10 victory at Louisville three weeks ago. However, the team plans to hold him out against FCS school Wofford.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Bryce Perkins amassed 490 total yards and accounted for five touchdowns to help Virginia beat North Carolina 38-31. Perkins threw three touchdown passes and ran for 112 yards and two scores as the Cavaliers became bowl-eligible for the third consecutive season. Perkins gave Virginia the lead for good on the second play of the second half, scrambling through North Carolina’s defense for a career-long 65-yard touchdown.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — reshman Jarren Williams threw 313 yards and two touchdowns as Miami won its third straight game against Florida State. Williams connected with Dee Wiggins on a 56-yard touchdown and Jeff Thomas on a 39-yard score. The Hurricanes also had nine sacks, including four by Gregory Rousseau.
ATLANTA (AP) — Pittsburgh bounced back from last week’s loss to Miami by overcoming three first-half turnovers to beat Georgia Tech 20-10. The Panthers forced a turnover on a potential tying touchdown run by Georgia Tech quarterback Lucas Johnson late in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets couldn’t manage another scoring threat.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina guard Brandon Robinson is out with a sprained right ankle. Team spokesman Steve Kirschner says there is no timetable for Robinson’s return, but X-rays show the ankle is not broken. Robinson got hurt when he blocked a fast-break attempt midway through the first half of the ninth-ranked Tar Heels’ exhibition victory over Winston-Salem State.
