NEW YORK (AP) _ Fourth-ranked Duke and No. 2 Kentucky have started their college basketball seasons with wins in the opener of the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden. Tre Jones scored 15 points and Cassius Stanley added 11 of his 13 points in the second half of the Blue Devils’ 68-66 victory over No. 3 Kansas. Tyrese Maxey scored 26 points in his college debut to lead the Wildcats to a 69-62 victory over No. 1 Michigan State.
NEW YORK (AP) — Ohio State, LSU, Alabama and Penn State are the top four in the College Football Playoff selection committee’s first rankings of the season. Next up are defending national champion Clemson, Georgia and Oregon. The 13-member committee will produce four more sets of rankings each Tuesday before the only ones that really count come out on selection Sunday, Dec. 8. The semifinals will be held this season at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, and the Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Dec. 28. The national championship game is Jan. 13 in New Orleans.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have placed quarterback Cam Newton on injured reserve, meaning he can’t play for the rest of the regular season. He could return for the playoffs, but that scenario would be a longshot since he would not have played since Week 2. Newton has missed the last six games while trying to rehab from a mid-foot sprain he initially sustained during the preseason.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars are going with Nick Foles at quarterback over rookie sensation Gardner Minshew. Coach Doug Marrone made the announcement during the team’s bye week. He says Foles is ready to return from a broken left collarbone and will start next week at Indianapolis. Foles was injured on the second series of the season opener. Minshew replaced him and went 4-4 as the starter.
ZURICH (AP) — The international soccer governing body says Iraq isn’t safe enough to host World Cup qualifying games against Iran and Bahrain. FIFA (FEE’-fuh) has asked the Iraq soccer federation “to nominate a neutral venue” for the matches on Nov. 14 and 19. The games were to be played in Basra.
