UNDATED (AP) — Ohio State, LSU, Alabama and Penn State are the top four in the College Football Playoff selection committee’s first rankings of the season. Next up were defending national champion Clemson, Georgia and Oregon. The 13-member committee will produce four more sets of rankings each Tuesday before the only ones that really count come out on selection Sunday, Dec. 8.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Samir Doughty scored 20 points to lead No. 24 Auburn to an 83-74 victory over Georgia Southern in the opener for both teams. The Tigers, coming off their first Final Four trip last season, could never quite pull away from the Sun Belt Conference’s Eagles. Austin Wiley had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers, and Danjel Purifoy also scored 13 while making three 3s.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tyrese Maxey, Kentucky’s latest freshman star, scored 26 points and the second-ranked Wildcats opened the season with a 69-62 victory against No. 1 Michigan State in the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden. The Nos. 1 and 2 teams opened their seasons against each other for the first time since 1975 and the Wildcats made their case to be top-ranked next week.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Kerry Blackshear Jr. had 20 points and 10 rebounds in his Florida debut and the sixth-ranked Gators opened their most anticipated season in more than a decade with a 74-59 victory over North Florida on Tuesday night. Blackshear was every bit as good as advertised. The 6-foot-10 graduate transfer who came to Gainesville after four years at Virginia Tech added three assists and two steals.

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Tyson Carter had a game-high 23 points to lead Mississippi State to a season-opening 77-69 win over Florida International. Iverson Molinar had 14 points and Reggie Perry added 13 for Mississippi State.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Highly touted freshman Anthony “Ant Man” Edwards scored 24 points to lead Georgia to a 91-72 win over Western Carolina. The Bulldogs pulled away late in the season opener for both teams.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Freshman Jordan Dingle scored 24 points and hit a jump shot with six seconds left, lifting Penn to an 81-80 win over Alabama. Kira Lewis Jr. missed two free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining after hitting the go-ahead 3-pointer and scoring 30 points.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee’s Yves Pons showed he’s capable of offering the scoring punch he hasn’t provided thus far in his career. Pons collected a career-high 15 points with seven rebounds and three blocks Tuesday as the Volunteers opened their season by beating UNC Asheville 78-63 for their 27th consecutive home victory.
