Here is the latest ACC sports news from The Associated Press

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Freshman Cole Anthony had 34 points and 11 rebounds in his college debut, leading No. 9 North Carolina past Notre Dame 76-65 in their opener. The son of former UNLV and NBA guard Greg Anthony broke Rashad McCants’ 17-year-old scoring record by a freshman in his first game and finished 12 of 24 from the field with six 3-pointers. He scored 15 points during the 29-13 run that put UNC in control.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Mamadi Diakite scored 12 points, Jay Huff added 11 points and 12 rebounds, and No. 11 Virginia shut down Syracuse 48-34. The Cavaliers became the first defending NCAA champion to start the next season with a true road game since UCLA opened the 1967-68 season at Purdue.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Xavier Johnson, Terrell Brown and Ryan Murphy scored 13 points apiece as Pittsburgh slipped past Florida State 63-61 in a rare Atlantic Coast Conference season opener. The Panthers (1-0, 1-0 ACC) won despite shooting 31 percent (16 of 51) from the field by taking advantage of the foul-prone Seminoles (0-1, 0-1). Pitt outscored Florida State 22-13 at the free throw line and knocked down nine 3-pointers, three of them by Murphy, a junior college transfer who provided Pitt with a needed jolt.

UNDATED (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference had nine Friday night football games this season, with all but one at conference venues. Wake Forest started the season with three in a row, and playing on a night that’s traditionally been devoted to high school ball isn’t high on the popularity index among coaches.

BOSTON (AP) — Derryck Thornton scored a career-high 23 points and Nik Popovic had 19 to lead Boston College to a 77-70 victory over Wake Forest in the season opener for both schools. Jay Heath, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard, added 18 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Eagles.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jada Boyd had a double-double in her first collegiate game, classmate Jakia Brown-Turner scored 14 points and No. 14 North Carolina State rolled to an 80-44 win over North Carolina A&T in the season opener for both teams. Boyd scored 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting, plus 8-of-9 shooting from the foul line, and grabbed 11 rebounds.

BOSTON (AP) — Boston College graduate transfer guard Derryck Thornton made a quick cut near the foul line driving toward to the lane and split the bottom of his left Under Armour sneaker during the first half of the season opener against Wake Forest.

UNDATED (AP) — UConn and Louisville will host the U.S. Women’s national basketball team in winter exhibition games in preparation for next year’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The No. 5 Huskies will host the national team on Jan. 27, before the No. 9 Cardinals face the squad on Feb. 2. Louisville coach Jeff Walz called the contest “an unbelievable opportunity” and added that it’s an honor to host the game. Former Cardinal star Angel McCoughtry could play for Team USA against her alma mater.
