Here is the latest Big Ten Conference sports news from The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State defensive end Chase Young says his suspension for the Maryland game resulted from a loan from a “family friend.” The star posted on Twitter that he repaid the loan in full and is “working with the university and the NCAA to get back on the field as soon as possible.” The third-ranked Buckeyes will not play Young in Saturday’s game against Maryland, citing a potential NCAA “issue” in 2018.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Alyza Winston scored a career-high 17 points, Taiyier Parks added a career-high 15 off the bench and three others scored 10 apiece as 17th-ranked Michigan State women walloped Detroit Mercy 110-52 Tuesday night. The Spartans (2-0) never trailed and outscored the Titans 22-4 in the fourth quarter to win going away. Tory Ozment, Taryn McCutcheon and Kayla Belles each scored 10 points for the Spartans.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Kobe King scored a game-high 18 points, Nate Reuvers added 14 points, 14 rebounds and nine blocks, and the Wisconsin Badgers defeated Eastern Illinois 65-52 in their home opener. Wisconsin forward Aleem Ford had 11 points before fouling out, as the Badgers bounced back from their season-opening overtime loss to No. 20 Saint Mary’s on Tuesday. Marvin Johnson led Eastern Illinois with 12 points, including two 3-pointers, and George Dixon added 11 points for the Panthers.

PHOENIX (AP) — Kofi Cockburn had 23 points and 14 rebounds, Andres Feliz added 21 points and Illinois pulled away late to beat Grand Canyon 83-61. Illinois worked the ball inside to Cockburn early and that opened up the rest of the floor.

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Devin Jensen had 23 points and Juvaris Hayes had 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, lifting Merrimack to a stunning 71-61 victory over Northwestern in just its second game as a Division I team. Merrimack (1-1) trailed 55-50 with 9½ minutes remaining before taking command with a 17-4 run to open a 67-59 advantage with just under a minute to go.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Luka Garza started the season with a double-double and Iowa pulled away in the second half for an 87-60 win over SIU-Edwardsville. Garza, Iowa’s leading returning scorer from a team that reached the second round of the NCAA tournament last season, had 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Hawkeyes won their season opener.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State coach Ryan Day says one of the challenges he faces is keeping players motivated and consistent during a season full of expectations. And that was before the third-ranked Buckeyes suspended defensive end Chase Young for Saturday’s home game against Maryland. Oho State is currently No. 1 in the playoff rankings with four games left in the regular season. The Terrapins are heavy underdogs this weekend.

UNDATED (AP) — Ohio State is meeting a Big Ten East rival that is going in the opposite direction. The Buckeyes haven’t seriously been challenged in their eight wins and need to sustain momentum before facing No. 5 Penn State and No. 14 Michigan to finish the regular season. Even with the news that Ohio State’s star defensive end Chase Young is suspended for the game, Maryland’s chances of winning this game are not good.
