Hawaii (KITV) — Despite a recent New York Post article stating the Big Apple is exporting homeless to the Aloha State, the Institute for Human Services (IHS) says their facts were manipulated.

The article reads, “From the tropical shores of Honolulu and Puerto Rico, to the badlands of Utah and backwaters of Louisiana, the Big Apple has sent local homeless families to 373 cities across the country with a full year of rent in their pockets.”

However, a spokesperson from IHS says the New York Post manipulated the facts from the New York Homeless Programs Office.

“Their program sent one person to Hawaii and it was a relocation candidate- similar to our IHS airline relocation program where we help homeless access housing support in other states,” the spokesperson stated.

IHS says they verify a ‘safety net plan’ and ask that the client pay half of their airline ticket in order to ensure there is an ‘investment in their solution.’
