ABC-7 Special Report: High school sports manager with down syndrome lives life to the fullest

EL PASO, Texas - Nineteen-year-old Mikey Ramirez is living life to the fullest.

A senior at Eastwood High School, Ramirez is getting ready for graduation day.

It's been a long high school journey for Ramirez who despite having down syndrome, didn't let that deter him from his love of sports.

Ramirez was determined to get involved, so he became a team manager for Eastwood's football, basketball and baseball teams.

With a smile on his face and a can-do attitude, Ramirez never let his disability get in the way of accomplishing his goals.

Whenever things got difficult for Ramirez, his mother, Sylvia Guerrero Ramirez was right behind him to give him that extra push.

"I'm very glad that he's not afraid to do stuff," Sylvia Ramirez said. "He's not afraid to try. He'll tell me that 'I can't' and I'll say, 'really then I guess you can't do this either,' then it's 'ok mom, let me try."

The entire Eastwood community has also been very supportive of Mikey.

Sylvia Ramirez says that not once has Mikey been treated badly because of his disability.

"I don't believe that he thinks he's different because everybody treats him the same," Sylvia Ramirez said.

She also hopes Mikey's story will serve as inspiration for other parents of children with disabilities.

"Let them enjoy life," Sylvia Ramirez said. "They'll be amazing, and they'll do amazing things."
