EL PASO, Texas — The child care industry, like many others, is still recovering but there is some help. The Texas Workforce Commission is distributing up to $3.4 billion in federal funds.

It’s all part of the Child Care Relief Fund which was launched back in late 2021. Workforce Solutions Borderplex said here in the El Paso region, $34.5 million is available for providers.

Those who are eligible can receive grants up to $150,000 which can go towards either hiring staff, provide training, new equipment, etc. to help providers expand their services.

“There’s a lot happening in the realm of child care to improve access for a lot more people and not just for those hit by the pandemic,” said Bianca Cervantes, spokesperson for Workforce Solutions Borderplex. “We’re recognizing that child care need to be a universal service for everyone, and not a personal burden. This is just another one of those initiatives where child care is being recognized as the priority to get economic recovery going.”

In order to apply, you must be actively licensed, have good standing with Child Care Regulation, and plan to stay open through at least May 2023. The last day to apply is May 31.

Workforces Solutions is hosting a workshop on Tuesday evening to help providers who are having trouble with the application.

It will take place at the Workforce Solutions Borderplex office located at 8825 N. Loop Ste. 122 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
