Volunteers spend Sunday morning painting the homeless shelter at El Paso’s Salvation Army Family Center

EL PASO, Texas - About a dozen volunteers from El Paso's LIFEchurch spent their Sunday morning at the Salvation Army Family Center in central El Paso repainting the center's homeless shelter.

The center houses over 100 people and currently is revamping their facility with the help of the Lowe's Hometown Grant. Lowe's selects 100 service projects across the country to help fund their assistance to the community.

A spokesperson for the Salvation Army says that their shelter is open to the homeless every day of the year, so these renovations and repairs are necessary to allow for safe and comfortable living conditions.

"When you have clients staying here 365 days a year, the shelter's never closed, not even now, the building just gets use a lot and that kind of thing just adds up over time," said Joanne Estrada.

LIFEchurch has an annual event where services are cancelled and their members participate in several service events across the community.

"We want to be good neighbors and we want to be good community participants and so one of the ways to dot that at basic level is to serve the city, and we're glad to this day and any day of the year," said LIFEChurch Lead Pastor Brent Moore.
