New Mexico State snap a 21 road game losing streak with a 23-13 win over UMass

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- For the first time in 1,498 days, the Aggies have won an away game with a 23-13 win over UMass. It's also the first time the Aggies have won back-to-back games since 2019.

The Aggies had to fight back from 10-0 down in the second quarter to secure the win.

The first turning point in the game came when Syrus Dumas intercepted UMass in the second quarter. On the ensuing offensive drive Ethan Albertson slotted a 41-yard field goal and got the Aggies their first points of the game. Albertson would go on to kick another two field goals throughout the game.

The second turning point came on their very next offensive drive when Head Coach Jerry Kill swapped out freshman quarterback Gavin Frakes for JUCO transfer Diego Pavia. While Pavia went 3 and out on his first drive, his second ended in a 39-yard touchdown pass to Jamoni Jones to tie the game at 10-10.

In the 4th quarter Pavia also threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Terrell Warner which saw the Aggies go up 23-13.

Pavia had 2 sacks, 2 touchdowns and completed 7 of 12 on the day for 194 yards, a career high. While also rushing for 56 yards.

Frakes on the other hand was sacked once and threw for 7 of 13 for 29 yards and rushed for 28 yards.

The defense for back-to-back games laid the platform allowing just 269 total yards and the 1 touchdown.

NMSU are now 3-5 on the season, the last time they secured three wins in a season was back in 2018.

Since NMSU was unable to reschedule a game for Nov. 5th, after they had to postpone their game against San Jose State, they now have another open week before they host Lamar on Nov. 12th.
