Punxsutawney Phil makes his Groundhog Day prediction
PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pennsylvania-- Punxsutawney Phil has spoken, Six more weeks of winter await us.
The beloved groundhog took his position for the 137th time in Gobblers Knob this morning.
Members of Phil’s “inner circle” summoned the sleepy marmot from his tree stump on Groundhog Day to deliver the anxiously awaited prognostication. Thousands gather every year for the spectacle at Gobbler’s Knob, a tiny hill just outside Punxsutawney to witness Phil’s weather-forecasting ability firsthand.
As the lore goes, if Phil sees his shadow and retreats back to his burrow, we'll have six more weeks of wintry weather. If he emerges and doesn't see his shadow, spring weather is close at hand.
Phil’s prediction echoed his forecast the past two years. In both 2021 and 2022, he predicted six more weeks of winter. In 2019 and 2020, he forecast an early spring.
