House Democrat Pete Visclosky of Indiana won’t seek reelection in 2020

House Democratic Rep. Pete Visclosky of Indiana announced on Wednesday that he will not seek reelection in 2020.

Visclosky has served in the House of Representatives for more than three decades and chairs the subcommittee on Defense in the powerful House Appropriations committee.

“On November 6th, 35 years ago today, I was elected to serve as Indiana’s First District U.S. Representative. Today, I announce that I will not seek re-election in 2020,” the Indiana Democrat said in a statement.

“For my entire career, I have worked to build support for our domestic steel industry and organized labor, secure investments in transformational projects and improve our quality of place to benefit the only place I have ever called home,” the congressman said, though he added, “Much work remains to be done.”

Visclosky is the latest member of the House to announce plans to retire rather than run for re-election in 2020, when House Democrats will have to defend their majority as Republicans attempt to regain control of the lower chamber. Hillary Clinton won Visclosky’s district in the 2016 presidential election.

The Indiana Democrat prevailed over a Republican challenger with around 65% of the vote in the 2018 midterm elections.

“I am forever indebted to the exceptional public servants who have served and continue to serve on my staff. Achievements were the result of the application of their talents and their tireless work,” the congressman said in his statement, adding, “I thank the citizens of the First District for their trust and for providing me the incredible life privilege of serving you in the United States Congress.”
