SOCORRO — The Bulldogs men’s baseball team is on their way to the 2009 state final four tournament in Round Rock and the Socorro community is showing their pride for their state-bound team.
Wednesday night, hundreds showed up for a farewell victory rally before the team heads out tocompete with the very best in the Lone Star State. “We’ve been doing this for years, we have a very special program here,” said Steve Munoz, who played baseball for the Bulldogs in the 1970’s.
Munoz is heading a caravan of about ten cars to the Austin area. Heis part of the “Mad Dog Ultimate Fan Club” and said the team’s journey into history has been very emotional. “I have to admit to a couple of tears. It finally happened, they reached the finals,” he said.
Fans of all ages showed up to support their winning team at their legendary baseball field. They were greeted by mariachis, dozens of cheerleaders, and the school dance team. Head Baseball Coach Chris Forbes and several of the team’s star players also delivered speeches.
Four buses were ready at the school. Thursday, they will be filled with fans, students and family members ready to cheer for their team in Round Rock.
The last El Paso-based team to win a state baseball championship was the 1949 BowieBaseball team. You can imagine the Bulldogs want to bring that trophy back to the Sun city.
