1949 Bowie Baseball Champ Cheers On 2009 Socorro Bulldogs
By ABC-7’s Marissa Monroy
As the Socorro High School baseball team celebrates its state championship, one former state champ in the Borderland couldn’t be prouder.
Gus Sambrano, a member of the 1949 Bowie High championship team, watched history repeat itself Saturday as the Socorro Bulldogs won the title.
The Bulldogs won the state championship 60 years and 5 days after Gus’s team emerged victorious.
No one has waited more anxiously for the drought to end more than Gus and his Bowie teammates. He says “in my wildest dreams, never did I think it would last 60 years.”
Saturday’s game was a bit nerve wracking for Gus as he watched Socorro play Lufkin in the final on television, but when the game ended, he was able to say “hip hip hooray”.
In addition, he had a smile that reflected the memories of a time gone by, but it was a familiar feeling for one state champ cheering on another…60 years later.
