2 Avengers and Spider-Man to be grand marshals of Sun Bowl Parade

Marvel Comics’ Iron Man, Spider-Man and Thor have been named as this year’s grand marshals for the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade.

The theme for the 76th parade will be “Comic Book Super Heroes and Villains.”

Marvel Comics’ three super heroes will make three public appearances in the Sun City before participating in the annual Thanksgiving parade.

“We are proud to sponsor the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Thanksgiving Parade for the eighth year,” said Karl Murphy, president and CEO of FirstLight Federal Credit Union. “To enhance the theme, we are bringing in Spider-Man, Thor and Iron Man which are appropriate for all ages and for the tradition of our parade that brings families together Thanksgiving morning.

“We encourage the El Paso community to come out and support the parade this year as they have in the past. FirstLight is grateful for the opportunity to give back to our community and support those that we serve.”

Spider-Man was first introduced by Marvel Comics in 1962 in Amazing Fantasy #15. The highly-popular fictional character has been the inspiration behind four blockbuster films in the last decade beginning with Spider-Man in 2002, Spider-Man 2 in 2004, Spider-Man 3 in 2007 and this year’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

Thor initially appeared as a mythological character in the 1951 Venus #12 before appearing as the modern-day Thor in the 1962 Mystery #83. Marvel’s “God of Thunder” was the star of the 2011 film Thor.

Iron Man made his comic book debut in the 1963 Tales of Suspense #39. The self-titled film was the third-highest-grossing opening weekend in 2008. The sequel, Iron Man 2, was released in 2010 with the third-installment scheduled for theaters in 2013.

Thor and Iron Man are also part of the 2012 box-office hit Marvel’s The Avengers. The film is the third highest-grossing motion picture of all time. A sequel for the The Avengers is set for release in 2015.

“We are very excited for this year’s grand marshals,” said Bernie Olivas. “Super hero characters are enjoyed by both children and adults. The kids have a lot of fun when we bring in characters and with the recent success of super hero films we thought adults would also appreciate the imagination of the float builders who are creating amazing floats for the parade.”

The three super heroes will make their first public appearance in El Paso on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Bassett Place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at Cielo Vista Mall from 4-7 p.m. On Wednesday, Nov. 21, the parade’s grand marshals will be at Freedom Crossing at Fort Bliss from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The 76th Annual FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade is Nov. 22 at 10 a.m.

Review Stand tickets for the parade can be purchased beginning Friday, Oct. 5, at FirstLight Federal Credit Union branches, Circle K locations and the Sun Bowl Association office. For more information call (915) 533-4416.
