El Paso Police investigating why false information was included in police report on state rep’s minor crash

El Paso Police are looking into how some supervisors used false information in a police report and accused a state representative of of a hit-and-run crash.

The report documents a minor car crash between State Rep. Dee Margo and an off-duty police officer.

Police now say Margo did not flee the scene.

On the back page of the official police report is an addendum from a traffic investigator who denies what is written on the first page – that Margo fled the scene.

Margo said on Tuesday the claim that he fled the scene was “false, its totally false.”

Margo said the allegations he tapped the car of an off-duty officer and sped off–more than a month ago are totally fabricated and El Paso Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Mears agrees.

“That’s unfounded,” Mears said. “it doesn’t meet the definition of what’s considered a hit and run.”

When asked if this type of crash was something that would result in filing a police report, Mears responded “typically no. This doesn’t even meet state requirements for a traffic collision report to be completed. I don’t have those answers yet. I would like to say though that when it’s a public figure who draws attention people want to make sure they dot their i’s and cross their t’s and sometimes that backfires.”

Mears said the police department is investigating the factors of the case as to why a report was filed.

False allegations in a report that Mears admitted wouldn’t normally be filed doesn’t sit well with Margo.

“The report that was written, by whom, I know nothing,” Margo said. “But I believe the men and women of the El Paso Police Department are some of the finest anywhere. I hope this wasn’t political, certainly it does appear that way to some.”

Margo is a Republican running against Democrat Joe Moody for the District 78 seat. Margo said he’ll be happy when this blows over and he can get back to the issues.

Mears also did not say exactly how many people within the police department are under investigation at this time in connection with the report.
