Coronado hockey team goes 3 for 4 on road trip
The Coronado High hockey team won three out of four games against Albuquerque-area schools in a weekend road trip.
The T-Birds beat Albuquerque St. Pius Saturday morning, then turned right around and beat Albuquerque La Cueva in back to back games at the Outpost Ice Arenas in Albuquerque.
Coronado had an easy blowout win Saturday afternoon against Rio Rancho Cleveland, before dropping a hard-fought game to defending state champs, Albuquerque Cibola Sunday morning.
The T-BIrds trailed early in both their Saturday morning games. St. Pius controlled the puck and appeared the better team for much of the first period before Coronado’s passing improved to move out to a 4- lead. The Sartans battled back to tie it up in the third period, before Coronado scored three unanswered goals to put away a 7-4 victory.
La Cueva led the T-Birds 1-0 and 2-1, and was still in the game, with a 4-3 deficit, before Coronado pulled away in the final period to make it look easy for the 7-3 final.
After a three-hour break, the T-Birds completed a Saturday sweep by dismantling Rio Rancho Cleveland, 14-1, at the Blades Arena in Rio Rancho. Jake Colclasure had a hat trick, and Joey Bone scored twice in an eleven second span in the second period to lead the way.
Sunday morning, Cibola was just too much for the T-Birds. The Cougars twice opened up three goal leads before a Coronado rally fell just short, 6-5, with the T-Birds just missing on several scoring opportunities in the final minute.
Coronado is now 6-1 on the season, entering the holiday break.
