One killed, another injured during training at Holloman, Air Force reports

The Air Force says the person injured in a training accident on a southern New Mexico military range was assigned to the 7th Air Support Operations Squadron, Fort Bliss, Texas.

That person has not been identified.

Officials at Holloman Air Force Base say a person killed during the Tuesday night incident was a civilian contractor while the person injured was an Air Force service member.

The 7th Air Support Operations Squadron is a geographically-separate unit assigned to the 93d Air Ground Operations Wing located at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia.

The incident happened at approximately 7:30 pm January 31, 2017 on the Red Rio range, located within the White Sands Missile Range complex, when an aircraft employed air-to-surface ordnance during a routine training event.

The injured ground personnel were evacuated to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center where one of them was pronounced dead at 9 pm, officials said.

The other individual was treated for injuries and released. Both pilots were uninjured in the incident. The incident is under investigation.
