10 killed after small plane crashes into Texas airport hangar
Ten people died Sunday after a private aircraft crashed into an airport hangar shortly after takeoff, according to authorities.
The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that a twin-engine Beechcraft BE-350 King Air crashed at Addison Municipal Airport.
Ed Martelle, a public information officer for the town of Addison, said the small plane made it to air but then ‘veered to the left and according to witnesses, rolled over, with the left wing down into the hangar.”
Video showed black smoke billowing from the building and a gaping hole in the hangar where the plane crashed.
No one was in the hangar at the time of the crash; the aircraft was destroyed by fire and all 10 people on board died, Martelle said.
He indicated the plane was scheduled to fly from Addison — which sits about 15 miles north of Dallas — to St. Petersburg, Florida.
The fire department was just 220 yards from the crash, he added, so the response was immediate and the fire in the hangar was quickly extinguished.
The identities of the victims had not yet been released. The Dallas County medical examiner’s office said authorities were still working to notify the families of the victims.
FAA investigators were at the crash site Sunday afternoon and the National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a crew to the scene. The plane’s tail number had also not yet been released.
