El Paso natives Will Licon, Sean Grieshop represent at USA Swimming Olympic Trials

OMAHA, Nebraska - For one of the driest cities in America, El Paso certainly was well-represented in the pool Sunday at the Team USA Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

El Paso native Will Licon's 2021 Olympic dream is still alive after a strong showing in the 100m Breaststroke Sunday.

Licon's time of 1:00:33 earned him a spot in Monday's final, where he will post seventh for a chance to represent the United States at the Tokyo Olympics.

After spending his youth in El Paso, Licon moved to Austin to train for moments like he had today. He barely missed out on the 2016 Rio Olympics, when he fell less than a second short of qualifying at trials.

An alum of the University of Texas, Licon set an American record in the 200m breaststroke in 2017.

Also competing in Omaha was Sean Grieshop, who also grew up in El Paso as the son of former KVIA Morning News anchor Ann Semmer.

Grieshop, who currently swims for the California Golden Bears, fell short of qualification in the preliminary round of the 400m Individual Medley with a time of 4:22.67.

Like Licon, Grieshop moved to Austin while in high school for superior training. He set a record at the 2015 World Junior Championships as part of a 4x200M freestyle relay team.

At the 2016 Olympic Trials, he set his first individual Junior World Record in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:14.00.
