Associate Municipal Judge Resigns To Run For District Judgeship

EL PASO, TX — Judge Rick Olivo has resigned his position with the City of El Paso as an associate municipal judge, Olivo’s office indicated Monday in a news release. The resignation was to be effective immediately, the release said.

Olivo will focus his attention on running for the position of Judge of the 448th Judicial District of El Paso County in the November 2008 general election, the release indicated.

“It has been an honor for me to serve the City of El Paso as a judge for more than six years and I look forward to continuing that service in the very near future,” Olivo said.

The 448th District Court is a new court created under the 80th Texas Legislature to help create civic infrastructure necessary to support the influx of military troops expected at Ft. Bliss, the release stated.

Olivo said the court is critical to efforts to properly plan for this massive increase in population and would be an effective way to help prevent the overcrowded dockets common to Texas’ growing and larger counties.

Olivo has sought an elected position before. Earlier in 2007, Olivo campaigned for a seat on Commissioner’s Court and was defeated by the incumbent, Dan Haggerty.
