What’s at stake in Indonesia, which is choosing a president and some 20,000 other office holders

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia has opened polling stations where nearly 205 million eligible voters will choose a new president and some 20,000 other public officials. The world’s third-largest democracy on Wednesday is holding its fifth presidential and legislative elections since shaking off a dictatorship in 1998. Three candidates are vying to succeed President Joko Widodo, who is serving his second and final term. Candidates are also running for the 580-seat national parliament and provincial and local offices. The official vote count may take about a month, but early results based on sampling are considered reliable.
