9 gold mine workers are missing in Turkey after a landslide that carries environmental risks

ISTANBUL (AP) — Nine workers are believed to be trapped underground after a huge landslide hit a gold mine in eastern Turkey. Turkey’s interior minister said the landslide on Tuesday involved a mound of soil extracted from the mine. he says 400 search and rescue personnel were at the site. Footage seemingly shot by a worker nearby showed a massive wave of earth rushing down a gully, engulfing everything in its path. A geologist says the extracted soil had been processed for gold and may contain dangerous substances such as cyanide that could pollute the Euphrates River. The mine was closed for two years starting in 2020 following a cyanide leak into the river.
