Day 1: Weigh-In
It’s 10:00 am on Monday January 19, 2015.
Most people dread stepping on a scale but today I did it in front of a television camera and reporter.
And worst of all I invited them to do it!!
Aaarrgh!!!
No, this wasn’t a bad dream; it was the beginning of a 12 week series to getting fit.
This series is called “Fit for ‘15” and it is sponsored by Planet Fitness.
Every day starting today I will be posting online and on social media updating my progress and of course my struggles.
Then every Friday on Good Morning El Paso and ABC-7 News @ Noon we will be providing helpful information on fitness and healthy eating as well as updating my progress.
Back to the scale, with the assistance of Clif Stevens, personal trainer and owner of Hour Little Gym, I was officially weighed in and had my measurements recorded.
You may wonder why we didn’t do this at Planet Fitness, well in line with their “No Judgment Zone” philosophy Planet Fitness does not have scales at their locations.
What!?!?!?!
This may sound odd but is right in line with Planet Fitness’ no Gymtimidation mantra.
Planet Fitness believes that a scale may make some feel pressured or unwelcomed so they choose not to have them at their locations.
I am the first to say Thank you Planet Fitness!!!! for not having scales at their locations because then I would have had to weigh in with everyone watching and a camera crew. Whew!!!
But we needed a starting point right? So the easiest and most universal measuring unit is weight.
So we decided on getting a personal trainer to join us and utilize his expertise during “Fit for ‘15” to give us an unbiased perspective on my progress. But let’s get back to the numbers.
So I weighed in, got measured and below you can see what I am starting off with:
Age: 41 Height: 5’11” Weight: 256 lbs Chest: 50″ Right Arm: 17 ” Left Arm: 16″ Belly: 46″ (around my body at the Belly Button) Hips: 40″ Right Thigh: 25″ Left Thigh: 24 ” Neck: 17 ”
There they are, the raw numbers straight off of that little notepad Clif was using to record what I had done to my body over the last 41 years.
What’s interesting is that these numbers weren’t a surprise to me at all. I had known I was overweight for sometime now and I needed a change.
In preparing for this segment I began weighing myself at home and knew approximately what my starting weight would be.
And for a second, just the tiniest fraction of time, I thought about drinking down 2 gallons of water right before weigh-in so I came in heavier than I really was in order to show more progress.
No, I didn’t drink 2 gallons of water and yes, I actually did think that but decided it was just another lie I was telling myself.
You know like the lie that goes “Eating a hamburger is my protein”.
