ABC-7 First Alert Tonight: More Monsoonal Moisture Brings Rain and Flooding Concerns.

More monsoonal moisture is moving into the Borderland tonight, bringing another round of showers and thunderstorms and keeping the threat for flooding elevated across the region.

Storms are expected to begin developing over the Sacramento Mountains during the early afternoon before additional activity moves in from the southwest out of Chihuahua during the early evening hours.

A Flood Watch remains in effect through late tonight for portions of the region. With soils already saturated from recent rainfall, it may not take much additional rain to cause problems. Some locations could receive up to another inch of rainfall, with locally higher amounts possible under stronger thunderstorms.

The overnight period will also need to be watched closely. Forecast models suggest a potential band of heavy rain could move into Luna, Sierra and western Dona Ana counties around midnight. The exact track and intensity of this activity remain uncertain.

For El Paso, additional thunderstorms could bring heavy rain, gusty winds, frequent lightning and localized flooding, particularly in areas that have already received significant rainfall.

Conditions begin to trend drier Friday. That could limit storm development across western New Mexico, although a few isolated showers and thunderstorms cannot be ruled out across Hidalgo, Luna and Grant counties during the late afternoon. The eastern portions of the region will have more moisture available, supporting a better chance for isolated to scattered thunderstorms.

The weekend looks much calmer and warmer as a ridge of high pressure builds over the region. Saturday and Sunday are expected to remain mostly dry. However, moisture is forecast to return late Sunday night and continue into Tuesday, potentially bringing another increase in shower and thunderstorm chances.

Forecast models are beginning to disagree on Monday regarding how much moisture will return to the region and whether the remnants of Tropical Storm Polo could have any influence.
