Update: Police shoot 21-year-old after he allegedly tries to run them over after burglaries
Update: A 21-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly trying to run over two uniformed police officers in El Paso’s Lower Valley.
One of the officers fired her gun at the man, wounding him in the process.
The incident occurred just after 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21 in the 9000 block of Betel.
A woman had called police to report that her vehicle had been broken into and that she was confronted by the burglar. Police have not released the name of the alleged burglar.
Police found the vehicle of the alleged suspect in the rear parking lot of the complex when two uniformed officers got out of their patrol car and tried to make contact with the suspect.
The suspect then attempted to flee in the vehicle and struck a parked vehicle, causing the vehicle he hit to roll onto its side.
He then allegedly drove at the officers at which time one of the officers shot at the vehicle in defense of herself and her partner, according to police.
The suspect vehicle then exited the complex and began driving through the neighborhood where other officers found the vehicle and suspect, along with a female passenger.
The suspect then allegedly fled once again in the vehicle and ultimately crashed on Kernel Street. Police say he then attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended a short time later by officers.
Police say that the vehicle the suspect was driving had been reported stolen.
Investigators have identified 22 vehicles that were burglarized overnight in the 9000 block of Betel.
The case remains an ongoing investigation at this time with the Crimes Against Persons Unit of the El Paso Police Department, the Crime Scene Unit, the Shooting Review Team and the Texas Rangers all investigating this incident.
The male suspect was treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound and the female passenger was taken for medical evaluation based on the significant impact involved in the crash at the apartment complex.
As is police procedure, the involved officer will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of this investigation.
The two officers involved are two-year veterans.
Original Story: The El Paso Police Department confirmed there was an officer-involved shooting early Monday morning in the city’s lower valley.
El Paso Police spokesman Det. Mike Baranyay told ABC-7 officers were dispatched to La Privada Apartments at 9030 Betel Drive for a burglary report.
When officers arrived they found two suspects, a man and woman, in a white car and pursued them to the intersection of Kernel Circle and Cashew Drive.
An officer fired a weapon after the driver tried to hit the officers with the vehicle, said Baranyay.
The man was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound and the woman was also hospitalized for evaluation.
Police have not identified the suspects or the officers involved.
