EPISD Police: Students involved in fight that injured administrator could face criminal charges

An Irvin High School Assistant Principal was injured after trying to break up a fight between students. Abc-7 has learned those students involved at that Northeast El Paso High School could very well face criminal charges.

It’s unclear how many students were involved at this point, but EPISD officials tell Abc-7 depending on what the videos they obtained reveal the students could face Aggravated Assault charges.

Witnesses say Assistant Principal Scott Gray was trying to break up a fight between students Wednesday when he was pushed to the ground and broke his kneecap. EPISD has its own police force with one officer at every middle and high school.

When a fight breaks out, teachers and administration are supposed to call for an officer or a security guard. Chief Victor Araiza tells Abc-7 unfortunately, these situations tend to escalate quickly and when that happens, like it did Wednesday, administrators like Scott Gray, are taught to respond to diffuse the situation.

“There’s potential criminal penalties and charges that students can face. It’s very simple to assume that well we’re going to have a fight after-school, or i’ll meet you in the alley, that’s how people become injured, they can face criminal charges, and unfortunately, those injuries can be very severe,” Chief Araiza said.

There are two investigations underway. EPISD is handling the administrative investigation. EPISD Police is handling the criminal investigation. Once they determine if the action of a student led to the injury of Assistant Principal Gray, then the students could face criminal charges on top of school suspension.
