Chihuahuas kick off Opening Day against the Las Vegas 51’s
Baseball is finally back as the 2016 PCL Champions will take the mound against the Las Vegas 51’s (The New York Mets affiliate) at 7:05 p.m.
This Opening Day is a little different than most, with more pregame festivities than ever before including a Falcon Warbirds flyover prior to the game and El Pasoan and ‘The Voice’ contestant Elia Esparza singing the national anthem.
Not only that, but the first 4,000 guests through the gates with paid admission and in attendance will receive a rally towel. If you’re hoping to quench your thirst, there will be a limited number of Budweiser sold at Southwest University Park that were bottled at the Anheuser-Busch brewery in Houston, Texas and transported to El Paso for the game all in under 24 hours.
While many big names for the Chihuahuas were called up to the big leagues (Hunter Renfroe, Austin Hedges and Ryan Schimpf), there are still some key players on the roster including Jabari Blash and Carlos Asuaje.
The PCL Rookie of the year said he believes the team still has the desire to repeat in 2017.
“I think its a matter of just coming out and bringing it every single day,” Asuaje said. “I don’t think it is a matter of taking it one step further or anything like that. Just a matter of keeping it going, walking around with a chip on our shoulder, that we have the championship here and that we have to maintain it.”
The Chihuahuas open the season with a 5-game home stand before heading on the road to face the Tacoma Rainiers.
