Chihuahuas beat Las Vegas 8-1 to open 2017 season

The Chihuahuas appeared to be in championship form once again, beating Las Vegas by a final of 8-1 to start their 2017 campaign the right way Thursday night.

The Dogs broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jabari Blash drove in two of those four runs on a double. Then, Collin Cowgill added a two-run home run to put the Dogs up comfortably, 4-0.

Franchy Cordero would hit a two run blast of his own in the next inning to put El Paso up 6-0. That was Cordero’s first home run in Triple-A.

The Dogs would add two more runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Carlos Asuaje. Asuaje hit a routine single to drive home one run and then scored on the same play after the right fielder badly misplayed the ball, allowing it to roll all the way to the warning track. That gave the Dogs an 8-1 lead and essentially iced the game.

El Paso and Las Vegas will meet four more times in the next four days at Southwest University Park.

The Chihuahuas improved to 3-1 all-time in season openers with the win against Las Vegas.
