Margo cancels campaign event in Duranguito due to protestors
Duranguito residents and preservationists gathered to protest a campaign event for mayoral candidate Dee Margo — but the event never happened.
“We got word this morning that there were going to be protests, and as a result of those protests we decided that public safety would override us having our event,” Margo said.
Margo has said that he is in favor of the new downtown arena being built in the Duranguito neighborhood. That, coupled with the fact that Margo chose to hold the event at Deadbeach Brewery — which is also in Duranguito — angered protestors.
“We need to know who’s going to come in, who’s going to support the people and these areas,” protestor Rosemary Martinez said. “A lot of us come from these areas, and who’s finally going to take notice that we’re not going to move away anymore?”
Margo said the decision to hold the event in Duranguito was not on purpose.
“It had nothing whatsoever to do with any type of incitement or otherwise with the folks who have concerns,” Margo said.
Protestors considered the canceling of the event as a success, but they said there’s still plenty of work to be done.
“It’s more important than it has ever been before,” Martinez said.
