Trash, debris cleanup on El Paso highways

Debris and trash on a highway can make for a dangerous drive.

AAA reported that from 2011 to 2014 road debris was to blame for an estimated 39-thousand injuries and more than 500 deaths nationwide.

In El Paso, the Texas Department of Transportation is responsible for cleanup of trash and debris on highways like Interstate 10, U.S. Highway 54 and Loop 375, but the task can vary.

TxDOT spokeswoman Jennifer Wright said there are several types of cleaning along highways, they include sweeping that is done monthly by contract workers.

The cleanup of debris is on an “as-needed” basis handled TxDOT crews.

In the event of a crash, the two truck company called out by law enforcement is responsible for clearing debris from the highway.

“Sometimes you’ll see fire crews doing the sweeping so that’s a case-by-case basis,” Wright said.

If it’s not picked up then TxDOT will clear the area.

Wright said the patrolling of debris and sweeping will increase during the windy season, but the reason it doesn’t happen as often is because crews also take care of pothole, spalling and guardrail repairs.

“It’s very hard for us to get out there and pick up debris that is pushed to the side of the road. It’s very unsafe, costly and dangerous to do that so it happens a little less often,” Wright said.

If a driver sees debris, like a mattress or tire, TxDOT said it is best to call 911.
