City, EPISD to share new parking lot at Coronado High School

The City of El Paso and the El Paso Independent School District are working together to alleviate some parking problems around Coronado High School.

A new parking lot will be built on Cloudview Drive between the high school and Irwin J. Lambda Park.

If you drive through Cloudview Dr. during the week, you can see the street is packed with cars, many of them belonging to students who show up extra early to find a good spot.

“I used to park next to the park because it gets so packed. It’s just terrible,” said one student.

“Adding a new parking lot is giving a lot of people more parking spaces.”

It’s a similar scene after school hours and on weekends when residents use the baseball fields and play area at Irwin J. Lambda Park.

The city and EPISD recognized the need for more parking for the school and for the park.

Officials believe the new lot will also alleviate traffic concerns expressed by residents to the city and the district.

A spokesman for EPISD told ABC-7 the district and the city will each pay $350,000 for construction of the parking lot.

Money used by EPISD will come from the district’s general fund.
The district will manage the lot and keep up with maintenance and repairs.

“I think it’s a good idea to solve our parking problems,” a student told ABC-7.

Construction of the parking lot will begin later this year.
