El Pasoans clean up after Monday storm, slight chance of thunderstorms today

El Pasoans spent the morning cleaning up and digging out from a brief, but powerful storm that hit the city Monday night around rush hour. Rain, hail and strong winds rolled into El Paso about 5 p.m. and lasted for a couple of hours.

The storm hit all portions of the city, including the West Side, Upper Valley, Lower Valley and East Side,

El Paso International Airport recorded 0.41 inches of rain, said ABC 7 Stormtracker Nichole Gomez. That still leaves the city about a quarter inch below the average total for the month, she said.

“I’d say the West Side got hit the hardest,” Gomez said.

The storm left debris in roadways around the city, especially on the West Side. A tree was knocked down in the Upper Valley.

Stormwater knocked down a rock wall in Daniel Pena’s yard on Confetti Street on the West Side.

“It was just like a roaring boom sound,” Pena told ABC 7.

Rush-hour traffic along Interstate 10 was snarled when two vehicles fell off a transporter truck. Police said the accident was weather-related.

Multiple power outages were also reported.

Gomez said El Paso has a “slight chance” of some thunderstorms later today, but Otero County in New Mexico and Hudspeth County east of El Paso are better candidates for some thunderstorms.

El Paso will soon see a return of hot weather with triple digit temperatures expected on Saturday, in time for the long Memorial Day weekend.
