NMSU wins WAC baseball title, Aggies headed to College World Series Regionals

It’s been an incredible season for New Mexico State University Athletics, and on Sunday that incredible season continued in Mesa, Arizona.

The NMSU baseball team won the WAC Tournament Championship after defeating the Sacramento State Hornets by a final score of 4-3.

By winning the tournament, the Aggies secured an automatic bid to the regional round of the College World Series .

The Hornets gave the Aggies everything they had in the final two days of the tournament.

NMSU hadn’t lost a game in the tournament and needed to beat Sacramento State just once on Saturday to lock up the WAC title.

Saturday’s game would go 15 innings and last more than 5 hours before Sacramento State would win the contest in a walk-off to hand the Aggies their first loss of the tournament.

4-3 was the final in Saturday’s game and it forced a deciding game 2 on Sunday.

The Hornets came out swinging jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning , but the Aggies would eventually tie the game in the 4th and then take a 2-1 lead in the 5th inning.

NMSU would have a 4-1 lead headed into the top of the 8th.

That’s when the Hornets added two more runs to cut NMSU’s lead to just one run going into the 9th inning.

The Hornets had a chance to take the lead in the top of the 9th with a runner on board, but the Aggies held the Hornets in check and the Hornets left the runner stranded.

NMSU won it’s first ever WAC baseball championship and their victory added another notch to what’s been a banner year for NMSU Athletics.

The NMSU football team won a bowl game in December ending a 57 year bowl game drought, and the NMSU men’s basketball team and NMSU softball team both won WAC championships and qualified for the NCAA tournaments.

The NMSU baseball team will find out who they will play in the regional round of the College World Series during the CWS Selection Show that will air Monday at 10 a.m. on ESPNU.
