Memorial services held for local toddler who bravely battled stage four cancer

Two-year-old Mia Ojeda had been battling stage four Neuroblastoma for half her young life. Tragically, her battle came to an end last week.

Suracy Gonzales, Mia’s mother, is still trying to come to grips with the devastating loss.

“Mia, I miss you my love – so much. My heart left with you the day you died in my arms. I love you Mia,” Gonzalez said, “Mommy and daddy look forward to the day we will see you once again.”

The Public viewing was held from 11-12 P.M. Wednesday at Nueva Iglesia Puerto del Cielo on 1430 Gail Borden. After the viewing, the celebration service was held at the same place until 2 P.M. Mia was laid to rest at Memorial Pines Cemetery in Sunland Park, NM.

Mia was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma in September, her mother said. Since then, the tumor spread to her esophagus and liver.

Gonzalez told ABC-7 her daughter’s zest for life never changed.

Mia’s Godfather remembered the good times with Mia, he said, “She had her days, but when she wasn’t in pain, it was crazy how much she would dance, how much she would smile, how much she wanted dad and mom.”

Despite her terminal diagnosis, the family pursued treatment at a research hospital in Michigan, which is not covered by their insurance.

The El Paso community raised thousands of dollars for Mia’s treatment fund, including the “Bearded Villains” club, which partnered with the Hermandad Motorcycle Club. There was also a car wash. Gonzalez said the money helps tremendously.
