UTEP upsets Texas Tech in exhibition game, 70-60

Even though it was a game that wouldn’t affect the record book, the UTEP Miners and the Texas Tech Red Raiders put on quite a show during an exhibition game Saturday at the Don Haskins Center.

In the end it was the Miners who would come out on top, defeating the Red Raiders by a final score of 70-60.

A great way for UTEP to start the season, defeating the national runner-up from a season ago.

And it was also for a good cause with the proceeds from ticket sales going to the victims of the August 3rd shooting at an El Paso Wal-Mart.

The Miners struggled in the first half, but still managed to keep the game close.

Texas Tech would lead 30-25 at the half, but the Miners would get it going offensively in the second half.

With just 9 minutes to go in the game UTEP would retake the lead, 46-45, and they wouldn’t give up the lead the rest of the game.

Three Miners scoring in double digits.

Daryl Edwards, a graduate transfer from LSU would lead the way in scoring for the Miners with 24 points.

Byrson Williams, a transfer from Fresno State, would end the night with 19 points, followed by Jordan Lathon, a UTEP starter from last season, who would end the day with 16 points.

Sure it was just an exhibition game, but it was a great way to start the season for UTEP head coach Rodney Terry and his squad, and there is definitely a lot for fans to look forward to this season.
